PART 3

Invitation to participate a Global Harwell Online Forum (9 or 10 August):
and join the Global Harwell Group

GH Group
1st August 2024

Dear Researchers,

We sincerely invite you to participate in dialogue aimed at building a consensus over a period of time on a globally shared educational goal: Global 'Harwell' (a word combining 'harmony' and 'wellbeing'). We recognize the necessity of being open to diverse perspectives in achieving a truly global goal. We must listen and seek suggestions for improvement.

We have posted the preliminary proposal of Global Harwell on the website globalharwellgoal.org/intro/part1.html, along with a set of FAQs related to the proposal at globalharwellgoal.org/intro/part2.html. (If you are curious about AI's potential to help humans pursue Global Harwell, you may also read a selected article on the General Artificial Companions Hypothesis at globalharwellgoal.org/selectedarticles/article1.html).

If you are interested in (i) providing feedback, whether positive or negative, (ii) participating in or organizing any activities related to Global Harwell, or (iii) simply staying informed about Global Harwell news and activities (of course, in the future, you may contribute when you feel ready), we welcome you to join the Global Harwell Group (GH Group). We expect that there will be more than 100 GH Group members all over the world.

Currently, our plan is as follows:

  1. Publish Global Harwell Statement: After a year and a half of discussions with GH Group members on the Global Harwell goal, during which Parts 1 and 2 of this proposal will be revised, we will publish a 'statement' on Global Harwell in the RPTEL journal, crediting authorship to the GH Group.
  2. Organize Special Issue: Following the publication of the Global Harwell Statement, RPTEL will launch a special issue dedicated to response papers on Global Harwell or any paper focusing on themes related to the Global Harwell goal.

Meanwhile, GH Group researchers are encouraged to take proactive steps that support the advancement of achieving the Global Harwell goal, as well as any suggestions to improve and expedite this process.

If you are interested in joining the GH Group, it will be helpful for us if you select one or more of the following roles to participate:

  1. Coordinator: You wish to spread and advocate for the Global Harwell goal within your country/region or academic communities through your contact, or you are keen to promote and coordinate activities related to Global Harwell.
  2. Activity Organizer: (i) You are committed to organizing activities such as panels or forums, either in person (at academic conferences or workshops) or online, or any other format related to Global Harwell. (ii) Additionally, after the event, you, possibly along with your colleagues, will compose a brief report summarizing the key points and outcomes of your event, which will then be posted on the website. If necessary, the Management Team will work to revise the proposal based on your report. (iii) You and your colleagues are encouraged to expand the brief report into a more detailed paper, which can then be submitted for publication in academic or professional journals.
  3. Commentator: You are keen to provide feedback on the proposal, whether you agree or disagree with it, to the Management Team.
  4. Moral Support Member: You prefer to remain a member of the GH Group for now, providing us moral support and possibly participating in some GH Group activities in the future when you are ready.

Whatever roles you choose, you are welcome to encourage your colleagues to join GH Group. If you decide to become a member of the GH Group, please send an email to chan@cl.ncu.edu.tw . We'll appreciate if you can provide the following information:

  1. Name
  2. Name of research institute
  3. Country or region
  4. Position title
  5. Email address (we shall not post this on the web)
  6. Roles you prefer to participate in, if any

We shall post all members of the GH Group in alphabetical order, without email addresses, on the website. Furthermore, we will set up a disclosed mailing list for all the members of the GH Group for communications.

IMPORTANT: We'll assume that you'll agree to join this group, and we'll send you news of GH Group activities. If you are not willing to join, please inform us, and your name will be removed as soon as possible.

Best wishes,

Management Team of the GH Group:
Tak-Wai CHAN (Taiwan), Ben CHANG, Weiqin CHEN, Wenli CHEN, Siu-Cheung KONG, Chee-Kit LOOI, Jon MASON, Lung-Hsiang WONG, Su-Luan WONG
