Research interests: use of technology to support inquiry-based, culturally relevant teaching and learning

Bio:

Dr. Ellen Meier is Professor of Computing and Educational Practice at Teachers College, Columbia University, and the Executive Director of the Center for Technology and School Change (CTSC), which she co-founded. She also oversees the Educational Technology Specialist certification program for the College. Her research interests focus on the use of technology to support inquiry-based, culturally relevant teaching and learning. She began her career as a teacher in a federal experimental school program with an interest in school reform and equity, and soon pursued school change more broadly in a succession of regional and national responsibilities. CTSC's research has resulted in the development of the Innovating Instruction model, which links pedagogical theory with practice. Funded in part by the National Science Foundation, CTSC facilitators have implemented the model in hundreds of diverse, urban schools in the northeastern U.S., as well as nine other countries to date. Dr. Meier's policy work includes serving as Co-Chair of New York's Technology Policy and Practice Council for the state's Board of Regents. Dr. Meier holds an Ed.D. in Leadership and Organization from Teachers College, Columbia University, an M.A. in Educational Administration from the University of Minnesota, and a B.A. in English Education from the University of Iowa.
